Hi to all of the girls in the Green Schools Committee,
Could you please have a look at the post I have put up on the G.S. page. To get to the page, go to 'School Activities' above and then click on 'Green Schools'. Thank you! Miss Higgins Weekly Round up Hello again everyone, We are delighted to be able to keep in touch with you all, we are really missing our classes each week. Hopefully the activities in our newsletters are helpful and most of all, fun! Seeing as we are still at home, this week's activities all use things you will find around the house, especially the kitchen. Wooden spoons and chopsticks become drum sticks, pots and pans can be your drums, and plastic cups and bowls make great sounds, especially if you tap them with a spoon! You can also make your own shaker very simply by putting rice or pasta shapes into your lunch box, pop the lid on and away you go... We would love to see you making music at home so why don't you send us a video of you playing your kitchen instruments? You can send them by email to: [email protected] Junior & Senior Infants Buster, Buster Here is a fun poem you may have heard before: Buster, Buster climb a tree Buster, Buster, slap your knee Buster, Buster, blow a kiss Buster, Buster, do not miss! Each line has 4 beats, tap or clap along with each number: 1 2 3 4 Buster, Buster climb a tree 1 2 3 4 Buster, Buster, slap your knee 1 2 3 4 Buster, Buster, blow a kiss 1 2 3 4 Buster, Buster, do not miss! You can also add in some actions, make sure to keep the beat! Buster, Buster climb a tree (climb 4 steps) Buster, Buster, slap your knee (tap your knees 4 times) Buster, Buster, blow a kiss (blow 4 kisses) Buster, Buster, do not miss! (point 4 times) For a bit more fun, have a look around the kitchen for things you can tap or shake to keep the beat while you say the poem Try to find things that make different kinds of sounds, like wooden spoons, metal spoons, plastic bowls or even pots and pans... Have fun! 1st & 2nd Class Double Double You may already know this song, but if you don't know it, don't worry, just say the words while keeping the beat. See how many different ways you can find to keep the beat! Body Percussion You can also try this body percussion with the poem, or make up your own! Every time you say Double - tap each shoulder twice: left, right (ti-ti) Every time you say This - clap your hands (ta) Every time you say That - tap your knees (ta) Have a go slowly, saying the poem and adding in the actions. You can also test out your "thinking voice" by leaving out a different word each time - Double, This, or That Kitchen Percussion Have a look around the kitchen and see if you can find some things to tap together while saying the poem. You can either tap the beat or the words. Ti-Ti Ti-Ti Ta Ta Double double this this Ti-Ti Ti-Ti Ta Ta Double double that that Ti-Ti Ta Ti-Ti Ta Double this, double that Ti-Ti Ti-Ti Ta Ta Double double this that 3rd & 4th Class Hopefully you can find some plastic cups and challenge yourself with these different cup patterns in the video below. You could make up your own rhyme or use one we have learnt together in school, and see if you can do all of the patterns! Click Here 5th & 6th Class Our friend Rob has recently started a YouTube channel called Rob's Kitchen Music, where he uses lots of different things you will find in the kitchen to play along with cool Brazilian beats. There will be no work assigned by the teachers over the break. The RTE2 School Hub will continue from 11.00am-12.00pm over Easter so it might be a nice idea to continue watching it. I would like to compliment our girls on how well they have adapted to distance learning in a short space of time and I want to thank you the parents/guardians for all the support you are giving them under these unusual circumstances. Well done everyone! The teachers will post work on the website after Easter, if we are not returning to school. During your break remember to stay safe and follow all the guidelines that our government have put in place. Spend time with your family, baking, exercising, helping out, painting, whatever you enjoy. #Flags4Frontline Across the country, we realise that heroes come in many forms and that many of them are in our own homes. In the face of the Global COVID-19 pandemic, these heroes are parents, cousins, neighbours and friends who are spending long hours, day and night, fighting to ensure that this virus is controlled and lives are protected. As a show of support for those workers and volunteers on front lines at this critical time, all children who have a flag in their national, county or club colours, or whatever team you follow, are asked to hang that flag from your gate posts, windows, or wherever you would normally place a flag when supporting your county club or team ahead of an important match. If you don’t have a flag, you could create a flag on a sheet of paper or cardboard, or by doing some sewing. Such a show of solidarity from everyone towards those on the front line will demonstrate our gratitude for their marvellous dedication to their critical work at this extraordinary time. Hanging out the flags will also provide colour to lift everybody at a time when people are psychologically feeling the effects of this terrible pandemic. We hope that in the coming days, with your help, every road, street, lane, avenue, estate and apartment complex will be festooned with colour to honour our heroes - our families, neighbours and friends in the front-line services. Wishing you all a very Happy Easter from everyone in St. Philomena's N.S. Hi again!
For this week's newsletter we have put together some activities and resources with an Easter theme. These activities require no specialist equipment and are suitable for the home setting where the whole family can get involved. We hope they will be helpful in keeping music-making part of your pupils' lives. We have also included some simple instruments that they could attempt at home. We'd love to see how they get on so if interested children can email in photos or videos of their creations to [email protected] Enjoy the Easter break and we look forward to seeing you all again soon! St. Philomena's G.N.S.Welcome to our website. Message from the Principal
I feel humbled and honoured to write this message as the newly appointed principal of St. Philomena’s N.S. I have been a member of the St. Phil’s staff for the past 14 years and I can honestly say that I have loved every day working in the school. As a Clara woman starting out in a Tullamore school in September 2008, I didn’t quite know how I would be received but I knew instantly that I had landed somewhere very special. The ethos of St. Philomena’s is grounded in respect, tolerance, openness and honesty and as a staff, we work hard at building relationships with each other, with the pupils and their families. My aim as principal is to ensure that every child feels valued coming in the school gates in the morning and that more than anything else, every child wants to come to school with us. In our school, Every Child Counts or No Child Counts and I will make it my main aim to foster a commitment to equality of opportunity for every pupil, every day. I will strive for a healthy, positive learning and working environment for the staff and our pupils and to provide a space where well-being will blossom naturally. As parent(s)/ guardian(s), you are the primary educators of your child/ren, so please don’t be afraid to come in and talk to us if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child/ren. Together, we can do so much more! With Love, Geraldine Gaffey Archives
