We are delighted to have received our Green Flag for the theme of Travel on Wednesday 24th May in the Hudson Bay Hotel, Athlone. The girls in St. Philomena's N.S. have participated in activities such as 'Trot on Thursday', 'Woolly Hat Walk' and 'Travel Day' throughout the year to help in our mission to achieve our fourth Green Flag.
Well done to all of the girls for their enthusiasm and participation, especially the girls on our Green Schools' committee. We wish to thank Mieke for her help and support in our Travel journey. We are looking forward to celebrating our flag raising day towards the end of the school year! The girls from St. Philomena's Homework Club went to Dublin last Tuesday to the Viking Splash Tour. They travelled on a DUKW and saw lots of famous sites around the city. The most exciting part was when the DUKW went on to the water at the Grand Canal Dock. The girls had their life-jackets on and no one got wet! The guide was full of information about St. Patrick's Cathedral, Christchurch Cathedral, Trinity College, Georgian Dublin, Oscar Wilde, U2 and so much more. The weather was beautiful and the girls enjoyed a picnic in St. Patrick's Park. We were thrilled when the Parents' Association presented us with fantastic Athletics equipment on Tuesday morning. They have worked very hard fundraising on our behalf and the money raised was spent on the new equipment. The girls will have enhanced Athletics lessons during PE and we are looking forward to seeing their skills develop and improve as they use the equipment. Thank you to everyone on the Parents' Association. We really appreciate your support. |
St. Philomena's G.N.S.Welcome to our website. Message from the Principal
I feel humbled and honoured to write this message as the newly appointed principal of St. Philomena’s N.S. I have been a member of the St. Phil’s staff for the past 14 years and I can honestly say that I have loved every day working in the school. As a Clara woman starting out in a Tullamore school in September 2008, I didn’t quite know how I would be received but I knew instantly that I had landed somewhere very special. The ethos of St. Philomena’s is grounded in respect, tolerance, openness and honesty and as a staff, we work hard at building relationships with each other, with the pupils and their families. My aim as principal is to ensure that every child feels valued coming in the school gates in the morning and that more than anything else, every child wants to come to school with us. In our school, Every Child Counts or No Child Counts and I will make it my main aim to foster a commitment to equality of opportunity for every pupil, every day. I will strive for a healthy, positive learning and working environment for the staff and our pupils and to provide a space where well-being will blossom naturally. As parent(s)/ guardian(s), you are the primary educators of your child/ren, so please don’t be afraid to come in and talk to us if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child/ren. Together, we can do so much more! With Love, Geraldine Gaffey Archives
