1. There will be a change in the morning procedure from August 31st. School starts at 9.20 am. The school yard door will open at 9.10 am. All children enter the yard through the side timber door. Parents/Guardians may leave their child at the school gate. There will be a teacher in the yard to supervise.
IT MUST BE NOTED BY PARENTS/GUARDIANS THAT THE TEACHERS AND THE BOARD OF MANAGEMENT ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR PUPILS BEFORE 9.10 AM OR AFTER 3.00 PM. 2. The Ploughing Championships will take place from the 19th-21st of September. School will open at 11.00 am and close at 2.00 pm for the three days. We have been advised by the gardaí to stagger opening and closing times as there will be a significant increase in traffic in the area during normal school opening and closing times, which could impact on the safety of children, parents and staff. On Tuesday, we presented certificates to the girls that had missed 0,1,2,or 3 days during the school year. We had a large number of girls that had achieved full attendance and they also received a medal. Well done to Emily O' Brien for having full attendance throughout her four years in St. Philomena's. We hope that everyone will continue to make a big effort to come to school every day next year.
St. Philomena's will close on Wednesday, June 28th at 12.00 p.m. for the summer. The school will re-open on Thursday, August 31st at 9.20 a.m. Hope you all have a lovely summer!
St. Philomena's end of year prayer service takes place on Tuesday 27th of June at 12.00 p.m. in the Church. All are most welcome to attend. Well done to the girls in Sixth Class for participating in the Write-A-Book initiative, organized by Laois Education Centre. The girls worked very hard at writing, editing and re-drafting their books. The books are a credit to the girls and we are very proud of their achievement. The authors were presented with certificates and gifts and they displayed their books for everyone to see. Thank you to Ms. Marron for guiding the girls throughout the process. They couldn't have done it without you.
On Thursday, our school was transformed into a circus, as we were celebrating receiving our fourth Green Flag for travel. Everyone dressed up in circus costumes and we went on a parade through the town. We were escorted by a garda car. Lots of people came to see our parade. When we got back to the school, Ms. Gaffey, who organized this great day for us spoke about all the initiatives the school took part in to achieve our flag. We had Trot on Thursday, a walkability audit, a travel action day, a woolly hat walk and much more. Megan Cornally and Aaliyah Adermosu, two members of the Green Schools Committee spoke about their role in the travel process. They welcomed Mieke Scholt from An Taisce who has been a constant source of guidance and encouragement throughout our travel journey. As Mieke is retiring this year, she was presented with a gift from the school and was given the honour of raising the flag. Presentations were made to Ms. O' Connor, Ms. Kenny, Ms. Higgins and Ms. Gaffey, our Green Schools Co-ordinators, who worked so hard to achieve our travel flag. Niamh Whelan played the bagpipes as the flag was raised. A magician and face painter entertained everyone in the yard afterwards and the girls had great fun in the photo booth. We were joined by our friends from the Offaly School of Special Education and we were delighted that they could share our special day with us. Huge thanks to Ms. Gaffey for organising such a fun day for us. We had our Sports Day on Wednesday in the Tullamore Harriers. We were divided into teams which represented GAA clubs in Offaly. We had lots of different stations including athletics, soccer, penalty shoot out and whistle games. The Parents' Association organized an obstacle course and ice-creams for us. After break we ran races on the track. We had a great day and tried our best in each activity. At the end of the day Ms. O' Meara called out the winning teams. In third place was Kinnitty, Killeigh came second and Tullamore came first. Ms. Clear presented the winners with medals. Thank you to Ms. O' Meara for organising a fantastic Sports Day for us. |
St. Philomena's G.N.S.Welcome to our website. Message from the Principal
I feel humbled and honoured to write this message as the newly appointed principal of St. Philomena’s N.S. I have been a member of the St. Phil’s staff for the past 14 years and I can honestly say that I have loved every day working in the school. As a Clara woman starting out in a Tullamore school in September 2008, I didn’t quite know how I would be received but I knew instantly that I had landed somewhere very special. The ethos of St. Philomena’s is grounded in respect, tolerance, openness and honesty and as a staff, we work hard at building relationships with each other, with the pupils and their families. My aim as principal is to ensure that every child feels valued coming in the school gates in the morning and that more than anything else, every child wants to come to school with us. In our school, Every Child Counts or No Child Counts and I will make it my main aim to foster a commitment to equality of opportunity for every pupil, every day. I will strive for a healthy, positive learning and working environment for the staff and our pupils and to provide a space where well-being will blossom naturally. As parent(s)/ guardian(s), you are the primary educators of your child/ren, so please don’t be afraid to come in and talk to us if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child/ren. Together, we can do so much more! With Love, Geraldine Gaffey Archives
