Weekly Roundup 25th May 2020 In the Hall of the Mountain King This week's activities are all based on this well-known piece from The Peer Gynt Suite by Edvard Grieg. Some of you may already know it from the movie Trolls, and you might have done some similar activities with your Music Generation tutor at school. We are including links to videos for each activity, so check with an adult before you go online. You don't need any special equipment or instruments for the activities, just yourself, your family, and maybe something to tap! The first video is a cartoon which tells the story of Peer Gynt, which comes from an old story from Norway. Edvard Grieg was a Norwegian composer who put the story of Peer Gynt to music, you might recognise even more of the music! The Story of Peer Gynt Instruments of the Orchestra Listen to the music - it starts quietly as the trolls tiptoe into the cave carrying Peer Gynt. Then it gets louder and faster as Peer Gynt runs from them, and ends with a big bang as he lands safely outside the cave! See if you recognise or can name any of the instruments. You will see how the main theme moves around the orchestra, starting with the low instruments first. Instruments of the Orchestra This listening map will help you to see exactly what instruments are playing each time. You might notice a bit of a conversation happens between different types of instruments! Keep a close eye on them and see if you can name them all! Listening Map Reading rhythms Practice reading your Ta's and Ti-ti's with this fun video! Use your kitchen instruments to play along, maybe using wooden spoons or chopsticks, or tap something like a pot, or plastic tub. Reading Rhythms Body Percussion Here is a challenge for you - can you do the actions to Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes along to the music for In the Hall of the Mountain King? Watch out as the piece gets faster and faster! Let's see how you get on with the challenge. How about composing your own body percussion by using different parts of your body for each symbol? Try it with your family and share the parts out. We would love to see what you come up with together! Musication video Line Rider We absolutely love this version of the piece, the animation is really cool! St. Philomena's G.N.S.Welcome to our website. Message from the Principal
I feel humbled and honoured to write this message as the newly appointed principal of St. Philomena’s N.S. I have been a member of the St. Phil’s staff for the past 14 years and I can honestly say that I have loved every day working in the school. As a Clara woman starting out in a Tullamore school in September 2008, I didn’t quite know how I would be received but I knew instantly that I had landed somewhere very special. The ethos of St. Philomena’s is grounded in respect, tolerance, openness and honesty and as a staff, we work hard at building relationships with each other, with the pupils and their families. My aim as principal is to ensure that every child feels valued coming in the school gates in the morning and that more than anything else, every child wants to come to school with us. In our school, Every Child Counts or No Child Counts and I will make it my main aim to foster a commitment to equality of opportunity for every pupil, every day. I will strive for a healthy, positive learning and working environment for the staff and our pupils and to provide a space where well-being will blossom naturally. As parent(s)/ guardian(s), you are the primary educators of your child/ren, so please don’t be afraid to come in and talk to us if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child/ren. Together, we can do so much more! With Love, Geraldine Gaffey Archives
