Here is our report on the Science Workshop: On Wednesday last week students from Tullamore College came to our school for Science Week. They gave us S.T.E.M. challenges to do. S.T.E.M. stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, so the challenges were pretty tricky! (Lillian) The whole school was split up into teams of 4 or 3. On the notice board it said who you were with, what number room your team was in and what number team you were. ( Grace) We did two challenges . One was where we had to drop an egg out the window without letting it break . The other one was where we had to build a tower using marshmallows and pieces of spagetti . (Mija) The first challenge was that you had to drop an egg out a window without breaking it. ( Leah Y.) The team I was on were doing well until one of our teammates ripped our parachute by accident so we had to go with plan B which was not very successful ! It was dropped from Ms. Corrigan's classroom and our egg completely shattered. (Aisling W.) The second challenge we did was; we had to make a tower. We only had 20 pieces of spaghetti, 1 meter of tape and 5 marshmallows, but one marshmallow had to go on top. We started making our tower in a cone shape and then built up in a straight line. Our tower fell when we were finished ! (Ellen) Overall it was a very fun day and I'd like to thank Molly and the other TYs and their teachers for joining us. (Katie) Thanks for reading our 5th class Blog.
Here are some of our drawings of the church and round tower at the monastery that St. Kevin founded in Glendalough ( The valley of two lakes) in Co. Wicklow. St. Kevin died in 617.
Today was a bright, beautiful day. We went for a jog / walk along the canal. Some girls were the "pacers" who led us in timed intervals of 30 seconds jogging and 30 seconds walking. We were tired after it but we enjoyed it ! We enjoyed learning about Vincent Van Gogh and his art. We looked at some of the workers (farmers, weavers etc.) that he painted in his early life and some of his later, much more colourful work. This is one of his self-portraits: We used his "Sunflowers" and "Café Terrace at Night" to inspire our own pictures. We hope you enjoy looking at our pictures here: This is a painting called "Wheatfield with Crows" by Van Gogh: Thanks for reading the 5th class Blog.
Please see the photos and report about the Christmas Shoebox Collection on the Homepage. Thank you to all the girls in 5th class who brought in a shoebox gift.
5th class has been using our new athletics equipment for P.E. class during the first half-term of this school year. You can read about it and see the photos here on the school website. Please look at the "Athletics" tab under "School Activities".
