Today was an exciting day in 6th class as we celebrated St. Brigid's Day with joy and creativity. Over the past week, we've been diving into the fascinating life of St. Brigid, and this morning, we gathered at the church for a special mass in her honour.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, students from Sacred Heart Secondary School joined us, filling the air with beautiful songs as they sang and played delightful music.
In the afternoon, we embarked on a creative adventure, making St. Brigid's Day crosses. Traditionally crafted from reeds, we put a modern twist on it by using craft pipe cleaners, and the results were just as fantastic! Laughter echoed through the classroom as we worked together to create these special crosses.
Our St. Brigid's Day crosses weren't just beautiful creations; they also became thoughtful gifts for our grandparents and parents. Each cross carries the spirit of our celebration, a symbol of the joy and learning we experienced on this day.
We look forward to more exciting events and learning opportunities as we continue to explore the richness of our traditions.

St Philomena's victorious in Cumann na mBunscoil Football Tournament
What a day of triumph it has been for our school as our young girls emerged victorious in the Cumann na mBunscoil football tournament today. The hard work, dedication, and passion that our girls have poured into their training sessions over the past few weeks paid off in a spectacular way. Facing the talented Scoil Mhuire team, our girls showcased their remarkable skills and determination, leaving us all in awe.
It's impossible to overstate the amount of effort our girls put into preparing for this day. Every single one of them displayed huge commitment and discipline in their training. Their determination was truly the backbone of this brilliant win.
The field was set ablaze with excitement as our girls demonstrated their talent on the football pitch. Every girl put their all in to the game from the very first whistle. Incredible skill was seen with Kayla Halloron scoring goals from frees that left us all stunned. Talent such as this, along with the outstanding teamwork displayed by our entire team, truly set us apart.
Eva and Taylor, our joint captains, led the team with grace and determination. Their leadership, both on and off the field, was instrumental in inspiring their teammates to reach for greatness. They demonstrated the spirit of unity and sportsmanship that St. Philomena's School stands for.
Today's victory is not just a win, it's a celebration of the values we hold dear at St. Philomena's School. Teamwork, dedication, and passion in all that we do have brought us this great success. It's a reminder of the potential that lies within our girls when we work together toward a common goal.
The Cumann na mBunscoil football tournament was not just a game for our girls; it was an opportunity to shine, and they did so brilliantly. We are immensely proud of our girls and their remarkable achievements. This victory is a testament to their hard work and the support they've received from their families, coaches, and our entire school community. Congratulations to all involved, and here's to many more victories in the future! To our winners, you've done us so proud!
Taking a stroll down the Grand Canal
This week, the girls in 6th class from both Ms. Madden's and Ms. McAuliffe's classes went on a fun morning adventure by the Grand Canal. In our P.E. class this term, we're learning all about the very first fundamental movement we ever mastered: walking. It's when we shift our weight from one foot to the other while going forward or backward. When we walk, one foot is always on the ground, and there's no jumping involved. Walking is something we do every day, like walking to school, playing games, having fun, and moving around our homes. It's super important to be really good at walking!
We had a fantastic morning, chatting with our friends, breathing in the fresh, crisp morning air, and taking in the beautiful views. We're making the most of these dry sunny days
Goodbye to the 6th class of 2023!
Our last few days in 6th class - what a year its been with a wonderful 6th class. This week has been filled with making memories - trips to the park, our book launch in the library, walks, watching our 6th class end of year video, ringing the bell one last time, playing games and of course lots of laughter.
6th class, you have been amazing!! You will be missed in our school. Wishing you all a great summer ahead and every best luck as ye move on to secondary school 💕
Now for one last time; 'off ye pop girlies!'
Le gach dea ghui, Ms McAuliffe 💞
Litter Picking 20th March
Today, our class went litter picking along the canal as lately we have noticed a lot of litter in the water and along the edge of the banks. With the help of Mrs Moran and Ms McAuliffe, we headed down the canal with our litter picker tools, gloves, bin bags and of course, our Hi-Vis jackets. We were shocked at the amount of rubbish we collected but were delighted to help out our local community!
Camogie training in 6th Class 🏃♀️
Over the last few weeks, we have been making our way down to O'Briens pitch in Tullamore for some Camogie training. Some of us are new to the sport while others already play with a local team. Regardless of this, this Camogie is beginner friendly and we absolutely love getting stuck in every week. We are learning some fantastic skills such as; basic hurley handling skills, how to hit the sliotar, roll picking as well as tackling for the ball in a safe manner. We all wear our helmets as well as shin-guards as this is best practice. Some of us are super interested and have even joined Ms Maron, Ms Madden and Ms McAuliffe for some after-school Camogie training on a Wednesday afternoon from 2.40pm to 3.40pm. Camogie is a great sport - it is a fantastic way to build new skills, to learn to be part of a team but also, to build old friendships as well as make some new friendships. Camogie Abu!!!
Downsyndrome Day 2023
Downsyndrome day occurs every year on the 21st of March as it is the 21st chromosome that has a set of 3 chromosomes as opposed to the 2. This leads to the diagnosis of downsyndrome. Hence 21.3 is the day we mark Downsyndrome day. We decided to host a fundraiser whereby children were invited to wear their silliest/ odd socks in an effort to raise some awareness and funds. We went around to each class in the school educating them on Downsyndrome and we also shared a QR code where children could watch an informative video. We had a fantastic celebrating this great cause and some great funds were made that will be donated to Downsyndrome Ireland.
Exploring Children's Rights through Visual Arts
Today in 6th class we completed an online visual art workshop that helped us express ourselves through vibrant imagery.
In this workshop, we learned all about and discussed our rights as children. We discovered ways to creatively express ourselves through imagery, slogans and font, so that we could design our very own posters. We used a variety of materials such as; stencils, paint, markers, printed paper, coloured paper, magazine cut-outs and more.
The workshop was hosted by The Ark Box and was held through Zoom. We really enjoyed the day, we learned so much and had great fun expressing ourselves creatively.
Check out our finished art pieces and the journey in getting there
Engineering Week
Today, 6th March, 6th class headed off to the Tullamore library to undertake a workshop that shines a spotlight on engineering as it is Engineering Week this week. Engineering Week is a time to celebrate how engineers make a difference in our world. We had great fun for the morning at the School Lego Workshops. Thank you to the Tullamore Library for hosting this fantastic Engineering workshop and to the super passionate and knowledgeable Bricks4Kidz STEAM Team - 6th class had great fun building our helicopters!
World Book Day
On Thursday 2nd March, the 6th class girls headed down to Ms Cunnigham's class to do some paired-reading with the 3rd class. 3rd class picked out some of their favourite books from their library and the 6th class read some pages to them. The 3rd class girls told 6th class why they enjoyed the book so much.
In our own classroom, we each researched a well-known author on the chromebooks. We recorded major events in that author's life, famous books they have written and the genre of book they write.
We also did some activities on our favourite books - we completed some activities on our favourite books - we recorded details such as the author, illustrator, genre, main characters as well as noting 6-9 other books we would also recommend.
We did a book club where we 'dropped everything and read' our books for a while. We shared details of our current book with our classmates, without giving away the plot and whether or not we would recommend the book.
