Reading month started on March 19th and we were very excited as the author Marita Conlon-McKenna came to visit 5th and 6th Class. She told us about growing up in Goatstown and Greystones and how she became a writer. She was very interesting and has inspired many girls to write their own stories. Last week, we celebrated our own 'Lá Gaeilge' in the school. The cailíní took part in all kinds of Irish activities - damhsa, spórt, amhráin, scéalta agus ceol! In the afternoon, we held a 'Tráth na gCeist' where the girls put their Gaeilge and their general knowledge to the test! Comhghairdeas to the winning teams! Go raibh maith agaibh to the teachers and to Ms. Brennan's dad, Frank, for helping out and to the cailíní for their enthusiasm on the day! Bhaineamar an-thaitneamh as Seachtain na Gaeilge 2019! On March 7th Ms Gaffey's class had an early start as they were going to Dublin to take part in the ESB Science Blast exhibition in the RDS. The girls had posed the question 'What happens when we practice mindfulness every day?' They did a pre test and post test and displayed their results. They learned a lot about how the brain functions and they even made their own models of brains. When the judges came around the girls were very confident answering all the questions. The judges were very impressed with the project. The girls got the opportunity to visit all the other schools' stands, watch science workshops and take part in plenty of scientific activities. The class were presented with their award at the end of the day and Ms. Gaffey was very proud of their achievements. They all had a most enjoyable day. Thank you to Ms. Gaffey for getting involved in such an interesting project. We are very lucky to have 2 heritage experts coming to our school each week. Melanie who works with straw and Geraldine who works with wool. We learn a lot at every visit and enjoy our art activities. Here are some photos of Ms Gaffey's class weaving leprechauns. Well done to Lillian for representing the school at the Offaly final of the Spelling Bee in Tullamore Educate Together National School. The competition was very tough, and Lillian did extremely well. She received a goodie bag and a dictionary for her hard work.

St. Philomena's G.N.S.Welcome to our website. Message from the Principal
I feel humbled and honoured to write this message as the newly appointed principal of St. Philomena’s N.S. I have been a member of the St. Phil’s staff for the past 14 years and I can honestly say that I have loved every day working in the school. As a Clara woman starting out in a Tullamore school in September 2008, I didn’t quite know how I would be received but I knew instantly that I had landed somewhere very special. The ethos of St. Philomena’s is grounded in respect, tolerance, openness and honesty and as a staff, we work hard at building relationships with each other, with the pupils and their families. My aim as principal is to ensure that every child feels valued coming in the school gates in the morning and that more than anything else, every child wants to come to school with us. In our school, Every Child Counts or No Child Counts and I will make it my main aim to foster a commitment to equality of opportunity for every pupil, every day. I will strive for a healthy, positive learning and working environment for the staff and our pupils and to provide a space where well-being will blossom naturally. As parent(s)/ guardian(s), you are the primary educators of your child/ren, so please don’t be afraid to come in and talk to us if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child/ren. Together, we can do so much more! With Love, Geraldine Gaffey Archives
